Overview
The architects wanted a sheltered walkway where shoppers slow down before they step into each store. One canopy system gave them the shelter, the glass, the lighting and the signage.
6 Carr Road has a long road frontage and easy access from the nearby motorway. The new retail area, with big brand stores and food outlets, gives Mt Roskill residents shops much closer than the centres at New Lynn or St Lukes.
The development mixed new buildings with refurbished industrial units. To make the frontage work for shoppers, the architects wanted a covered walkway along the whole length.
Equinox came in as one system instead of a string of trades. The same canopy carries the glazing, the lighting and the signage, so there was one supplier to coordinate and one install sequence.
The design uses 4 mm aluminium canopies, 2 m deep, with strengthened laminated glass canopies at each end. Integrated lighting and signage add to the retail branding and welcome customers after dark.

The full canopy system. Cantilevered outrigger brackets carry solid aluminium panels back to the wall, with the gutter, dropper and flashing built in. It fixes outside the weather line, and only the bolts pass through it.
